Click your heels together three times and say Swarovski!
Did you know that Dorothy's ruby slippers in the Wizard of Oz were made encrusting Swarovski elements in the bows? And they weren't even supposed to be red!
In Franck Baum's novel, published in the 1900, Dorothy wears silver shoes, but Noel Langley, The Wizard of Oz's film screenwriter, decided to change the colour to red due to the new Technicolor technology which allowed Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to shoot the high-budget movie in colours.
The iconic slippers were designed by Gilbert Adrian and there were at least 2 versions of them. In celebration of the 70th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz in 2009, Warner Bros Consumer Products in partnership with CRYSTALLIZED™ Swarovski elements invited the best top shoe designers — including names like Jimmy Choo, Moschino, Oscar de la Renta, Giuseppe Zanotti and Sergio Rossi - to redesign Dorothy’s iconic Ruby Slippers for modern times.
They all had unlimited access to CRYSTALLIZED™ Swarovski elements to create their visions and all sold for charity in an auction at Warner Bros. Entertainment's "Emerald Gala" in 2009.
We too at Silverissimo could not resist to use 80+ dark red Swarovski zirconias, and they are featured in one of our Sabina's Heart variant available in a dark red colour.
